The issue of exclusives is quite an emotive one, but I agree with Watto that it must be difficult to know how many to produce and that over-producing might be the safer option.  The only way I could see it working where you have a strictly-limited number of items is if the quantity was well-publicised beforehand, that it was done on a first-come, first-served basis, and that people are limited to only buying so many.  Also, if the event was run over a number of days, I think that there would need to be a limit per day, so that you don't get people who can't make it until later on missing out.

To my mind, event exclusives, despite the name, are not necessarily produced solely for those people that attend.  Lucasfilm/Hasbro et al must know that there will be a huge demand for any such items and would probably be accused of alienating the fans if they only produced very limited quantities that were only available at the event.  As a fan, I'd be pretty annoyed (and have been in the past) if I didn't have access to an item simply because of a) where I live in the world and b) I am not in a position to fly off to every event where an exclusive is available.

I like Watto's idea of including (and subsequently removing) the show details for any items sold at the event, so that there is a distinction between those and any sold afterwards; how difficult/costly/time-consuming this might be would undoubtedly be the prohibiting factor as to whether this could ever be considered.

Having attended a couple of events where exclusives were being sold (CIII and CE), I know the frustration of standing in line and paying full-price for an item, only to discover that months later it is readily-available elsewhere at a fraction of the price.  My wife and I spent over 6 hours queuing for the CIII Vader and I have to admit that I ended up buying our full allocation of 8 (5 more than I needed - 2 for me and 1 for JamesB), on the basis that I had missed other things as a result of waiting in line, so I was gutted when I saw that these were selling for £10 at the Entertainer not long after (albeit without the Star Case).

At the end of the day, I don't know what the answer is, although I do think that it's perhaps one of those situations where it's impossible to please everybody.

I agree with everything Watto and Adam have said; usually, I'm very laissez faire when it comes to the whole 'de-valuation', re-pack, exclusive issues, but it's just the scale of how cheap these things are being sold on this occassion. I can't think of another exclusive that went down in price so much so quickly (within a year!). Even Holo Leia didn't manage this speed of decrease!!

I agree that quantites must be difficult to get right, but if this many were going to get made we should have had our own exclusive figure for CE, rather than the CIV one in new packaging!!
